Snacks for kids: Night Time Treats for Toddlers

Feeding toddlers can be tricky! They’re at an age where they’re discovering what they like and what they don’t. As a parent, this can feel like your little one is constantly waging war on healthy food choices.


If you can relate, no need to worry! We’ve got the perfect secret weapon. With these healthy snacks for kids, you’ll be fully prepared for your little one’s next snack attack.


1. Banana Bites




These banana bites are healthy and so simple to make! They’ll have your little ones begging for more.


What you need:


  • 1 Medium banana
  • 1/3 Cup peanut butter
  • 1/3 Cup apple juice
  • 1 Large egg
  • 1/2 Teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2/3 Cup flour, whole wheat
  • 1/3 Cup oats, dry
  • 1 Teaspoon baking soda


How to make them:


  1. Mix banana, peanut butter, apple juice, egg and vanilla extract well.
  2. Then add whole wheat flour, oats and baking soda. Mix well.
  3. Use a teaspoon to scoop batter on cookie sheet.
  4. Flatten and shape with the back of a spoon.
  5. Bake for 10 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius.


2. Cranberry Avocado Muffins




These delicious muffins are a great way to get your toddler to eat healthy without them even knowing!


What you need:


  • 2 Cups gluten-free flour
  • 2 Teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 Teaspoon salt
  • 1 Avocado
  • 1/2 Cup sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 Teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 Teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 Cup plain full fat yoghurt
  • 150 ml warm Tea4Kidz Original Rooibos tea
  • 125 ml (120g) dried cranberries


How to make them:


  1. Heat oven to 190 degrees Celsius and spray or line a regular muffin tin.
  2. Pour the warm Rooibos tea onto the cranberries, then leave to steep while continuing with the rest of the recipe.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine all the dry ingredients.
  4. In a large bowl, scoop out the avocado and beat until smooth and creamy. Add sugar and mix well. Beat in egg until completely combined. Then add vanilla, yoghurt and cinnamon and mix.
  5. Pour in the flour mixture 1/3 at a time, mixing until just combined.
  6. Strain cranberries, and then gently fold cranberries into the batter.
  7. Spoon batter into muffin tin, filling 3/4 way to the top.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
  9. Let it cool in the pan for five minutes before removing and enjoying.


3. Peanut Butter Cheerio Bars




Make your little one’s night with these healthy cheerio bars! They’ll have your toddler smiling from ear to ear.


What you need:


  • 3/4 Cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 Cup honey
  • 3 Cups of Cheerios


How to make them:


  1. Line a 20cm×20cm pan with aluminium foil and set pan aside.
  2. Cook peanut butter and honey in a pot over medium heat, constantly stirring until completely melted and blended.
  3. Remove the pot from heat and stir in Cheerios. Mix until the cereal is evenly coated.
  4. Place mixture in prepared pan and press in place.
  5. Refrigerate for one hour before cutting into bars.
  6. Store any leftovers in refrigerator.


4. Apple Chips




Break all the rules by giving your child chips before bedtime. These healthy snacks are filled with all sorts of nutritious value.


What you need:


  • 1/2 Teaspoon white sugar
  • 1/8 Teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 Apples


How to make them:


  1. Position oven racks in top and bottom thirds of the oven. Preheat to 100 degrees Celsius. Line two large baking sheets with parchment.
  2. Stir sugar with cinnamon in a small bowl.
  3. Slice apples into very thin (1 to 2 mm) rounds.
  4. Arrange slices in a single layer on prepared sheets. Then sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar mixture to desired taste.
  5. Bake in top and bottom thirds of oven until edges are ruffled, for about one hour. Flip apple slices, then rotate sheets. Continue baking until chips are golden, for about one more hour.
  6. Remove from oven and allow to stand for 10 minutes
