There are many reasons we love our Laager Rooibos tea! It’s delicious, and it provides numerous health benefits, but did you know you can also use it as a marinade? Yes, you heard right! It makes the most scrumptious marinade for meat. We have a couple of recipes for kids for you to try out below.

Child nutrition is as important to us as it is to you. The brilliant thing about using Rooibos as a marinade is that it adds nutritional value to your dish! It also works well as a marinade across different types of meat – chicken, beef, lamb, pork chops - you name it.

We are positive your kids will love these recipes for kids.

Smokey Rooibos Pork Ribs

What you will need:

  • 2 x rack of pork ribs
  • 1 tbsp. salt
  • Pinch of ground pepper
  • 250 ml Laager Rooibos tea
  • 125 ml olive oil
    • Fresh sage leaves

How to make it:

  • Step 1: In a dish, mix together the olive oil, salt, pepper and Laager Rooibos.
  • Step 2: Using a mortar and pestle, crush up the fresh sage leaves and then sprinkle into the mixture.
  • Step 3: Place your meat in a bowl and pour the marinade over.
  • Step 4: Leave to soak overnight for maximum flavour.
  • Step 5: Pop on the braai, replacing charcoal with wood chips (this will give that smokey flavour).
  • Step 6: Serve up with a salad or veggies and watch your kiddies gobble it all up!

Scrumptious Sweet Chilli Chicken

If you’d like to introduce your kids to Chinese-inspired food, this is definitely one to try. Best of all, it’s quick and easy to make!

What you will need:

  • Chicken pieces, on or off the bone (whichever your kids prefer) – about 1kg
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 250 ml Laager Rooibos tea
  • ½ cup Sweet Chili Sauce
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ½ onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp salt

How to make it:

  • Step 1: Combine Sweet Chilli Sauce, olive oil, onion, salt, and paprika in a food processor until smooth.
  • Step 2: Add your Laager Rooibos.
  • Step 3: Pour the marinade over the chicken pieces and marinade for as little as 30 minutes or as long as 24 hours (depending on the depth of flavour you want).
  • Step 4: Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius.
  • Step 5: Bake in its marinade for 1 hour or until cooked through and skin is crispy.
  • Step 6: Serve up with a side salad and some of your kid's favourite veggies.

Worcester Rooibos Steak

Here is our third and final Laager Rooibos marinade recipe you can try out for your kids. Like the others ones, the prep time is minimal, which is always a bonus because we know how busy life is!

What you will need:

  • 1 cup Worcester sauce
  • 250ml Laager Rooibos
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • 1 tbsp. salt
  • Steaks

How to make it:

  • Mix the Worcester sauce, olive oil, salt and Laager Rooibos together.
  • Pour the mixture over the meat.
  • Allow to soak for a couple of hours.
  • Fire up that braai and cook away.
  • Place a garlic bread on the fire to heat through.
  • Serve up steaks with the garlic bread and a side salad and enjoy!
